Do Your Period Products Need An Overhaul?

Organic pads, tampons, cloth pads, menstrual cups, discs and period undies. We really are living in a golden age of menstrual care. More and more awareness is being raised around alternatives to generic pads and tampons. These products are typically bleached, with the cotton potentially containing traces of industrial chemicals such as the pesticide glyphosate, phthalates, parabens, and fragrances which are all known to be endocrine disruptors.

For women wishing to optimise their menstrual cycles, fertility and overall health and wellbeing, switching up their menstrual care products to organic and low-tox options is an obvious choice.

Reusable menstrual care products are also a wonderful way to reduce personal waste and landfill, as well as a reduction in cost. An average menstrual cup made of medical grade silicone is a one off investment and will typically last for 10 years. This is in stark contrast to products like pads and tampons which are an ongoing cost with ongoing waste (boxes, plastic wrappers etc).

Another benefit of trying out different types of menstrual products is finding what works best for you and your body best. Some women find tampons to be uncomfortable but find a menstrual cup completely unnoticeable. Some women may dislike wearing bulky pads but find the streamline design of period underwear more suitable.

Various menstrual products also can contain varying volumes of blood, meaning some options can be worn for longer before requiring a change, which can be perfect when you’re on the go or can’t always get to a bathroom as often as you would need to with other options that may hold less volume. This is also a great option for women with heavier menstrual flows that find they are often doubling up with products such as wearing a super tampon plus a pad.

Regardless of what you choose, we love that more and more options are coming out and that innovation is at an all time high in the world of women’s health! Something we highly endorse here at Kyri Cycles.
